Sisters of Fortune
Jehanne Wake’s latest biography is about the four Caton sisters who were born in late 18th century Maryland. They were the granddaughters of Charles Carroll of Carrolton, the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence.
The sisters won coveted places in Regency high society after the battle of Waterloo in 1815.
- Marianne Caton was loved by the Duke of Wellington and became a lady-in-waiting at Court.
- Bess Caton was a wizard at the stock market, becoming a successful lady speculator.
- Louisa Caton became the first American duchess and a friend of Queen Victoria.
- Emily Caton married a Canadian fur trader and loved being at home in Maryland.
Like a tale from Jane Austen or Georgette Heyer, Sisters of Fortune is a meticulously researched true story of money, love and life at the very top in America and Britain.

a fascinating tale. … Wake's truly remarkable accomplishment is to succeed in tracing 'the filmy threads of women's influence’ in high society on both sides of the Atlantic through more than six decades”. Megan Marshall, The New York Times Book Review
I found Sisters of Fortune absolutely fascinating…I could not have enjoyed it more. I envy the people who have still to read it. Julian Fellowes, creator of the Award-winning series Downton Abbey
